Many Americans responded to the news of the December 7th, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor by volunteering to serve in the military.

On December 9, 1941 Cleveland Indians star pitcher Robert W. “Bob” Feller did just that, becoming the first of 500 Major League players to enlist during the war.

Despite a draft deferment that would have kept him out of the service and a $100,000 contract with the Indians ($1.4 million in today’s dollars), the 22-year-old pitching phenomenon was determined to serve and serve in combat.

“Bullet Bob” lived up to his pre-war nickname serving as a CPO gun captain of a Quad 40mm gun mount on the battleship ALABAMA (BB-60).  He certainly saw his share of combat, earning eight battle stars while serving on board ALABAMA during North Atlantic convoy duty and fierce Pacific battle like Tarawa, the Philippine Sea and the “Marianas Turkey Shoot.”

He never regretted losing nearly four seasons during his time in the Navy.  His number 19 was retired by the Indians in 1956 and he was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility.  He remained active in Cleveland baseball until the end of his life.

Before his death last December 15th, 2010, Bob Feller was pleased to learn that he would receive the Lone Sailor Award, a fitting tribute to a proud Navy man.

The 610 Lending Library in the Fitness Center has a new book by Allan Topol, well known author of “DARK AMBITION” and “SPY DANCE”, titled “CONSPIRACY”.

In a presidential election year, rumors can kill — and as California Senator Charles Boyd pulls ahead in the polls, he becomes a target.

Soon after anonymous charges are made against him, the senator is found dead. It looks like suicide — but is it?

Now U.S. attorney C.J. Cady and the senator’s sensuous campaign manager,Taylor Ferrari, must become unlikely allies and follow the trail of deception out of Washington — to expose an unseen enemy with the power to manipulate the fate of nations.

“We hope you will enjoy!”
