Off The Hookah

While I was sorry to see the demise of Z Gallerie at 314 Clematis Street (and we did our fair share of shopping there for some lovely home fixtures), the space did not go to waste.  In its stead stands a wonderful addition to the downtown WPB dining establishments.

Both the inside and outside decor of Off The Hookah looks like a scene in an Egyptian palace (not that I’ve ever been in one), with many statues of recognizable symbols (burial masks and dogs); couches, “beds” and various seating with lots and lots of pillows; and small rooms almost hidden from view for more privacy.  All very colorful.  In actuality, the main dining area was a bit small, with space taken mostly by a few bars, and a large area for entertainment which takes place later in the evening.  Our server (he of the cute English accent) informed us that they were expecting upwards of 1500 people that evening.  Entertainment can consist of music, as well as belly dancers and flame throwers (yes, that’s what he said).

On to the main topic of conversation – the cuisine.  What surprised me a bit is that their menu does not have many true Middle Eastern choices….not that I’m complaining.   We were offered a sushi menu, but we declined so I do not know what they offered.

We started with a couple of mojitos, after which our taste buds were ready for anything, in other words, the drinks were strong and the type of fare didn’t matter as long as it was tasty.  It did not disappoint.   The appetizer was the one appropriate regional dish – an Off The Hookah sampler of hummus, falafal cakes and salad, accompanied by pita bread.  We each ordered a shrimp cocktail and they did not skimp on the shrimp which many restaurants do.    Following were the entrees of a whole hogfish snapper served with rice, and lamb chops over potatoes au gratin.  The server (he of the cute English accent) took the time to filet the fish at our table.   The meal was excellent, and I have never tasted such sweet lamb chops.  We shared desserts of mango creme brulee and a small chocolate mousse.   I definitely grade this a good and satisfying meal.

Service was attentive, perhaps a bit too attentive.  I think in a matter of minutes another server, the manager, the chef (and a few others) had been to the table to see how we were doing.  Maybe they knew I was doing a review….NAH!  But we didn’t lack for anything.

As for the hookah, our server (he of the cute English accent) explained that you can smoke one with tobacco outside, but only the fruity flavored waterpipes with no tobacco are allowed inside.   Maybe next time….

Shelley, great review. Have been wondering what that place was like. Thanks for giving us all the info in such a witty, clever way.

I went for my Birthday last week and I really enjoyed the belly dancer and bartender flair show. The food was good, I thought the menu had a lot of options and I ate so much, good thing the DJ came on at 10pm, I danced it all off!
