Reef Rd Rum Bar

and Hip Hip Hooray! The restaurants are coming to town!   Hopefully, with all the “Coming this Fall” signs, our appetites will be sated with new delicacies.

The first winner, just recently opened, is located at 223 Clematis Street, across from the ever popular Rocco’s Tacos.  Although Rocco has partners in his endeavors, his is the first name that usually rolls off people’s tongues when referring to his group of restaurants, and it looks like he struck gold once again with Reef Rd Rum Bar.

If you go with a group (of at least six), it would be wise to make reservations, but with less than that, reservations are not accepted.  So hubby and I arrived early to get ourselves a nice comfy booth.   The booths are the huge curved kind against the wall, but seating also consists of high top tables and a few other scattered tables.

The decor is a lot of bamboo and wood, attractive, yet subtle, in a mostly Caribbean motif.  Wherever we looked, we commented on another element of the overall design.   There is a long bar with individual lighting fixtures, shaped in the form of blowfish, hanging from its ceiling.  There are some colorful round fixtures in the center ceiling, perhaps representing beach balls (just a guess, but that’s what came to my mind), and each booth had an overhead light encased in a different wood design. It all made for a very charming effect.

I suppose I should get to the dining experience. We ordered our drinks — a pineapple mojito and banana colada. No complaints there. We each started with the soup of the day – a Shrimp Bisque. Things are looking up. We shared the Chesapeake Bay Crab Cake, accompanied by a small salad. Can a few greens with dressing be described as outstanding? And can a crab cake blow you away as the best crab cake you ever tasted? Yes and Yes!! Our main entrees – Beijing Twist Tuna and the Louisiana Blackened Salmon. Each dinner came with two sides (doing the math in her head: 2+2=4) and our choices were the Jamaican Coconut Rice, Garden Market Vegetables, Grilled Asparagus, and Sweet & Spicy Slaw. Not only was the fish tasty, but the veggies get their own high grades for flavor.

After deciding that we may be too full for dessert, I hear my husband say to our friendly, attentive (but not intrusive) server, “two cappuccinos and the Strawberry Shortcake Tower.” Expecting a very tall cake on a plate, we received a tall glass, parfait style, filled with cake, strawberries, cream. Heavenly!

Will we return….oh yeah!!
