According to MySpace, Howley’s is a 59 year old male who wants to meet the Hungry and Thirsty people of South Florida. We are two of those hungry and thirsty, and we once were regular customers of Howley’s which is an institution in West Palm Beach, located at 4700 So. Dixie. Their motto is “Cooked In Sight Must Be Right” which, from my vantage point, is not possible unless sitting at the counter (if then), and we always opted for a table or booth in another room. I had always read wonderful things about this famous landmark restaurant and there was a time when we did enjoy our basic, yet appetizing meals. I’m using the past tense because, after a hiatus of some time, I now remember why we hadn’t returned in awhile.
We recently decided to give Howley’s another go, probably our last. The menu is akin to “what grandma used to make” in an old-fashioned diner sort of way. For starters, there was a matzoh ball soup. Our entrees consisted of the vegetable combo (an all vegetable platter plus rice), and the jumbo crabcakes. I was a bit suspicious when the server placed some syrup and butter on the table. Apparently, she heard *pancakes* instead of crabcakes. I guess it was funny at the time, and I’m wondering if I need some speech lessons.
In the final analysis, our taste buds were not jumping for joy as we consumed these dishes. Interestingly, I read some recent reviews and found many more negative, so it appears that Howley’s does not have the stellar reputation that it once did.
I never tell anyone in absolute terms to avoid a restaurant, because we all have different points of view, varying tastes, and your visit could be very positive. But I’m not going to make it one of my recommendations. ![]()
Shelly…. Thanks for your interesting restaurant review of Howley’s. I totally trust your judgement and your fine taste buds and I will NOT take my wife to Howley’s.
