Grand Lake Chinese Cuisine

Do you know what this neighborhood needs?   A good Chinese Restaurant that is walking distance in the Clematis District or CityPlace.    You can already eat  exceptional Japanese fare as I’ve described in a previous review.  OPENING SOON, according to the CityPlace website, there will be both a Thai and Vietnamese restaurant.  We all know what that means – let’s not hold our breath. So I’m taking you a bit off the beaten path to a wonderful discovery of a savory authentic Chinese meal.  Located at 7750 Okeechobee Blvd., a mere 7-mile drive, is a gem  that should not remain hidden.  Advertising itself as New York Style cuisine is a truthful claim, as the restaurant can rival any in Chinatown. Entering a large, airy space of tables (no booths), you are greeted immediately with a smile and a bowl of crispy noodles, so fresh and good that we usually finish them before our appetizer arrives.  There are two menus, one listing just the appetizers (some familiar, some not), and the regular menu of several pages with everything else.

As a sample, our most recent dinner included the following: winter melon soup which was a special that night (could serve more than 4 so we each had a couple of bowls), bacon-wrapped shrimp balls, Mongolian lamb (flavorful and succulent), crabmeat noodles (husband thoroughly enjoyed those), with ice cream for dessert. Unfortunately, though the menu listed red bean ice cream, there was none, so we ordered the old standbys of chocolate and pistachio. While we both could have finished our meals, after filling our plates a couple of times, we chose to take some home. The cost was more than reasonable, especially since we’re getting an extra supper out of it.

I’m sure many of you are familiar with Singing Bamboo in the Crosstown Plaza at Military Trail, or Crazy Buffet on Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., and I am a fan of those, as well. But for something a bit different, or even for a familiar dish, give Grand Lake Chinese Cuisine a try.
