An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but here are some ways to keep down the mid-section from growing and causing health problems. The fat tissue that lines the abdomen, the adipose fat, is high in the inflammatory markers that lead to heart and cholesterol problems.

Dr. Mary Ann McLaughlin, a cardiologist with Mount Sinai Medical Center suggests a number of ways to counter these possible problems:

Exercise, especially in ways that work the stomach.

Cut down on carbs, which can increase fat around the abdomen.

Eat more nuts, shich can help reduce cholesterol.

Add flaxseed powder, which cuts cholesterol, to cereal and other food.

And finally,, drink grape juice, cranberry juice and even a glass of wine daily.

“Many thanks to The American Legion Magazine”

The 610 Clematis Street library has two new Mary Higgins Clark (MHG) books for your reading enjoyment.

“WHERE ARE YOU NOW?” Ten years ago, 21-year-old Columbia University senior Charles MacKenzie Jr. (Mack) walked out of his Manhattan apartmenty without a word to his roommates and disappeared. He calls his mom once yearly, on Mother’s Day, but refuses to answer frantic questions. This year when he calls, Mack’s sister Caroly, now 26, announces her intention t track him down, no matter that it takes.

“I HEARD THAT SONG BEFORE” When Kay Lansing was only six, she sneaked into the hidden chapel of the Carringtons’ New Jersey mansion and overheard a man say angrily to a woman, “I heard that song before.” That same evening, after a formal dinner dance, 18-year-old Susan Althrop drove home with the Carrington heir, Peter — and disappeared.

We thank the person or persons who contributed these books to our building library.

It doesn’t cost a thing and you still pay only for the actual electricity you use. But remember to keep an eye on your actual energy usage and continue to conserve.

In addition to H2O, other beverages can count toward your daily fluid needs, including caffeinated beverages, such as coffee, tea and soft drinks.
